Mom’s Fudge Pan-Bringing Back Good Memories
I think I have had a love affair with food my whole life. Some people look at photo’s and have special memories or a small trinket that brings them back in time. Me? I look at my mom’s old fudge pan and I am flooded with special memories. When my mom baked she was happy and I think that’s why I have so many fond associations with food and pots and pans.. LOL.
First and foremost my mom had the sweet tooth of all sweet tooth’s! One of her favorite things to make was homemade fudge and she used this 8×8 pan. If you examine the second photo you can see all of the knife marks from cutting all that fudge up over the years. Much to your disappointment I am not posting a fudge recipe. This time its all about the pan and the memories.
When my mom passed away we were clearing out her kitchen. I kept some great old cook books, her Dansk red pot that helped make the best Mac n’ Cheese and I kept this old beat up pan, her fudge pan. Mom was born in 1922 depression era and was a widow at 48. We grew up with out a lot of extra anything. Money was tight so a treat was really special to us, making the sight of that fudge pan filled with sweet chocolatey fudge all the more appealing. Little cold squares of delectable fudge with walnuts of course! Oh, and she would slather the pan with butter before putting the hot chocolate fudge in to cool. After all we would not want the fudge to stick!
Makes you wonder, when we have so much do we appreciate the small simple things?
We still use this pan to this day . I will cherish it always and maybe one day my daughter will receive this special pan as a gift and she will understand why it is a gift indeed!
Long live homemade fudge!
R.I.P Mom! I imagine you sitting at a banquet table in heaven filled with all kind of sweets just for you!!
