Cooking Oil=Fattening- Get The Facts On Caloric Dense Foods
Trust me, it’s no coincidence that there is a Court Jester on the label of this delicious olive oil. Yes, he is mocking us for our lack of knowledge. Maybe you have heard me talk about oil. There is approximately 140 calories per tablespoon of any type of oil. I can only speak for myself, but in the past I would glug- glug -glug the oil in the frying pan. Not to mention how sexy it looks when you drizzle your veggies with some gorgeous olive oil just before serving or the glistening swirl of oil I put in the pan before I add my meat to get that fabulous sear! I’m either being funny here or I have an unhealthy relationship with food!! Hmmmmmmm…… not sure about that one! I probably add at least 500 unnecessary calories to basic dishes I prepare!
Here comes the wake up call!
My family and I went on a 30 day cleanse at the beginning of 2017. We cut out meat, dairy, oil, fish, sugar, processed food and chemicals in food. IT WAS SO HARD. I’m just saying! We learned a lot during this time of great sacrifice (LOL) but the big take away for me was how much oil I was using and how fattening it is.
There is no moral reason for eliminating oil and it’s not that processed but it is high in caloric density. See the chart below, it will show you how full you will feel after eating 500 calories of different food groups. So, basically if you consume 500 calories of oil, not only will you not feel full (and the food tastes really good) you will end up over eating more high calorie food just to feel full. All the way to the right shows how full we feel eating 500 calories of fruits and veggies which happens to also be low in caloric density and makes you feel completely full and satisfied.
The link above is to a good article on the subject.
I have cut way back on how much oil I cook with at home. I don’t worry so much when we go out to eat because I can’t control that but I can control what I cook with. We did add back meat, eggs, fish but we are eating less of it. I am trying to buy the best quality of everything I can afford and trying to stay as organic as possible. I say take it slow and steady, remember its all about small deliberate decisions that add up to a healthier lifestyle!
Give it a try.
